What is BitTorrent (BTT)?

A 2019 token, not the file-sharing protocol. One old coin became 1,000 new ones. The protocol does not require BTT.

First published 14 April 2020. Expanded in October 2026 so the file-sharing protocol is not described as this token, and so the old unit is not described as the new one. BitTorrent Inc. sold the token on 28 January 2019, one session for BNB and one for TRX. Bram Cohen built the file-sharing protocol long before that. The protocol does not require this token. A download is not a balance of BTT. Justin Sun’s company had bought BitTorrent Inc. The token was issued on TRON. What is TRON (TRX)? is that chain. TRX pays a TRON fee. BTT is not TRX.

The sale document created 990 billion BTT. The public sale was 6 percent of that. In December 2021 the project launched BitTorrent Chain and redenominated the token. One old BTT became 1,000 new BTT. The count went from 990 billion to 990 trillion. The market value of a holding was not meant to change. Old tokens were renamed BTTOLD. New BTT is the unit this page means. A balance that still says the old unit is a thousand times too large if you read it as the new coin, or a thousand times too small the other way. Binance said it finished that swap on 27 January 2022.

BitTorrent Chain is its own chain. The new token is also a TRON token. They are different sends. The wrong network is still the wrong city. Paying BTT inside a torrent client is a product feature. It is not a requirement of the protocol, and this page will not walk through it. Nothing here is an instruction to seed a file, to swap BTTOLD, or to buy BTT.
