First published 8 May 2023, the week mainnet was open. Expanded in October 2026 so the address trap is the first thing a sender reads. Sui is a proof-of-stake ledger whose programs are written in Move. SUI is the coin. You pay fees with it, and you delegate it to validators. The supply is capped at 10 billion. Most of that supply was not circulating on the day the chain opened. Unlocks after launch are a schedule, not a yield, and they are not a halving.
Mysten Labs built it. Several of the founders had worked on Diem, the stablecoin project associated with Meta that did not launch as a public chain. Sui is not Diem, and it is not a Meta product. Aptos is a different chain that also uses Move. What is Aptos (APT)? is that chain. A token on one will not arrive on the other.
Objects, not only balances
On Sui, coins and other assets are objects with owners. If you alone own an object, the chain can often handle that transaction without lining it up behind everyone else’s unrelated transactions. Objects that are shared, because many people can touch them, do have to be ordered. That split is the design’s bet on speed. It is not a promise that every application is fast, and it is not a promise the network cannot stall.
Gas is priced in SUI. You set a budget. The fee has a computation part and a storage part. Creating data you leave on the chain costs more. Deleting that data refunds most of the storage fee. A wallet that seems to have lost a little SUI after a busy application may be looking at storage, not at a missing transfer. The reference price of gas is set for an epoch. A screenshot of a fee is a day.
The address looks familiar and is not
A Sui address is a hexadecimal string that starts with 0x. So is an Ethereum address. They are not the same size of identifier in the way a careful wallet checks, and they are not the same network even when the first characters match. Pasting a Sui address into an Ethereum withdraw, or the reverse, strands the coins. The wrong network is still the wrong city. Read the network badge out loud: Sui, not Ethereum, not an Ethereum layer 2, not Aptos.
Delegating SUI points your stake at a validator for an epoch. Rewards are part of the design. They are not a bank account. Staking is a lock and a queue, not a savings account. A site that offers to claim a Sui airdrop and asks for a recovery phrase is not an airdrop. Nothing here is an instruction to buy, delegate, or move SUI.
