First published 6 January 2020. Opera had just opened. Expanded in October 2026 so Sonic is not described as a rename of the same balance. Fantom is a proof-of-stake chain. The foundation built Opera, which opened in December 2019. Andre Cronje is the person most associated with the early public design. FTM is the fee on Opera. Chain id 250. A 0x address there is not an Ethereum address. Ethereum without the jargon is a different network. The wrong network is still the wrong city.
On 18 December 2024 the same organisation opened Sonic, a new chain, chain id 146. S is the fee there. FTM upgrades to S one for one, through a portal you sign. It is not something Opera did to every balance. For the first 90 days the project allowed that swap in both directions. After that, its own pages describe the path as one way, FTM into S. Opera still produces blocks. FTM left on Opera, or an FTM token on Ethereum, is not S. A site that says it will finish the upgrade and asks for a recovery phrase is not the portal. A bridge is extra software, not a tunnel.
The launch post talked about thousands of transactions a second. A sales line is not a receipt that your transfer was cheap on a Tuesday. On 18 June 2025 the project said new S would start to be minted. A price times an old FTM count is not the S supply. Staking S has a withdrawal wait the docs publish. Staking is a lock and a queue, not a savings account. This page will not walk through a validator. Nothing here is an instruction to upgrade, to stake, or to buy FTM or S.
