First published 19 October 2022, the week the tokenomics note came out. Mainnet’s genesis was 12 October. Expanded in October 2026 for the supply ceiling and for the investor unlock that has now run its course. Aptos is a proof-of-stake chain whose programs are written in Move. Several of the people who built it had worked on Diem, the stablecoin project associated with Meta that never launched as a public chain. Aptos is not Diem, and it is not a Meta product. What is Sui (SUI)? is the other public chain that uses Move. A token on one will not arrive on the other.
APT is the coin. You pay fees with it, and you delegate it to validators. The genesis supply was 1 billion. About half was marked community, with smaller shares for contributors, the foundation, and investors. Contributor and investor coins were locked for four years from mainnet, with nothing in the first year and a monthly drip after. That lock finished in October 2026. Foundation and community allocations were on a longer monthly schedule, out toward 2032. An unlock is coins that already existed. It is not a new chain, and it is not a yield.
A ceiling that arrived later
Staking rewards mint APT. The 2022 paper described a maximum reward that started near 7 percent a year and was designed to step down, and it said fees were burned. Both are parameters governance can change. A dashboard rate is that epoch. In March 2026 a governance proposal set a hard cap of 2.1 billion APT. The cap is a ceiling. It is not a statement that 2.1 billion exist, and it does not cancel the rewards still being minted underneath it.
Delegating APT points your stake at a validator. Locked coins from the launch allocations could be staked too, which is why a large staked figure was never the same thing as coins you could sell. Leaving takes an unbonding period. The screen shows how long. Staking is a lock and a queue, not a savings account.
An Aptos address starts with 0x. So does an Ethereum address, and so does a Sui address. They are three notebooks. The wrong network is still the wrong city. A site that offers to claim an Aptos airdrop and asks for a recovery phrase is not an airdrop. Nothing here is an instruction to buy, delegate, or move APT.
