What is Celestia (TIA)?

The fee for publishing data on Celestia. Genesis supply was 1 billion. Inflation continues. A rollup’s own coin is not TIA.

First published 1 November 2023, the day after mainnet beta. Expanded in October 2026 so a data publication is not described as a rollup, and so the inflation rate is the one the later upgrades set. Celestia is a chain that sells data availability. A rollup, or any other chain, can pay to publish its data here and leave execution on its own ledger. TIA is the fee for that publication, and it is the stake. The design started as a paper called LazyLedger. Mustafa Al-Bassam, Ismail Khoffi, and John Adler are among the people who built the network. What is Cosmos (ATOM)? is the hub of the toolkit. TIA is not ATOM. Ethereum without the jargon is one place the rollups that use this data also live. Paying TIA does not pay an Ethereum fee.

Mainnet beta, codenamed Lemon Mint, opened at 14:00 UTC on 31 October 2023. Genesis supply was 1 billion. That was not a ceiling. New TIA is minted for stakers. The launch schedule started at 8 percent a year and was written to step down toward a floor of 1.5 percent. Upgrades in 2025 cut the rate, including a November 2025 change to about 2.5 percent, still stepping toward that floor. A dashboard rate is that upgrade, not the 2023 paper.

An unlock is not a new chain. A blob is not a rollup

The public allocation, including a genesis drop of 60 million, was unlocked at launch. The drop’s list closed on 17 October 2023, before the chain opened. Contributor and backer coins were on locks of a few years. An unlock is coins that already existed. A site that says claim TIA now is not that drop.

You pay TIA to publish data. The chain that uses the data is still its own chain, with its own fee coin if it has one. The network’s claim is that a light node can check the data was published by sampling it, rather than by downloading every byte. This page will not walk through the sample. A sample is not a statement that the transactions inside the data were honest.

A Celestia address starts with celestia1. An Ethereum address will not receive TIA. The wrong network is still the wrong city. Unbonding started at 21 days. A 2025 upgrade shortened it to 14 days and an hour. The screen shows the wait that applies to the unbonding you started. Staking is a lock and a queue, not a savings account. Nothing here is an instruction to publish data, to stake, or to buy TIA.
