What is Jupiter (JUP)?

The governance token of a Solana swap app. It is not SOL, and it does not pay the fee.

First published 2 February 2024, two days after the token started trading. Expanded in October 2026 so a swap router is not described as a chain, and so JUP is not described as the fee. Jupiter is an application on Solana. It finds a route for a trade across other people’s pools and sends the Solana transaction that does the swap. JUP is the governance token of that application. SOL is the coin that pays the fee. What is Solana (SOL)? is the ledger. This page is the token.

The founder posts as Meow. There is no Jupiter blockchain. A balance of JUP is not a balance of SOL, and a swap that fails is a Solana transaction that failed. If you leave coins inside a Jupiter product that holds them for you, that product is a custodian for those coins. A swap that settles in your own wallet is not an exchange balance. An exchange balance is an IOU, not a wallet.

Ten billion at launch, and an airdrop that ended

The launch supply was 10 billion. Half was described as the team’s to manage, with locks, and half as the community’s. The first distribution, on 31 January 2024, was 1 billion JUP for wallets that had used Jupiter before 2 November 2023. The project said the starting float would be at most 1.35 billion, including a launch pool and loans to market makers. A price times 10 billion counted coins that were not the float.

The project also described further community distributions, on a yearly rhythm it called Jupuary, from tokens it had already allocated. Those rounds happen on the project’s own page, in the window it names. The January 2024 claim is closed. A link in a chat that says claim JUP, and asks for a recovery phrase, is not that page. A wallet signature is not a handshake.

Tokens have been burned since launch, including by a trust the project says receives a share of on-chain revenue. A burned coin is gone. The live supply is the launch figure minus the burns, not whichever number a widget cached. Receipt tokens for a pool or a staked position are not new governance coins. The project has said it will not issue a second governance token. A second ticker with the letters JUP on another chain is someone else’s token.

Voting with JUP is a vote on Jupiter’s products and grants. It is not a vote on Solana, and it is not a claim on Solana’s fees. A reward programme for staking JUP is a parameter of that programme. Staking is a lock and a queue, not a savings account. Nothing here is an instruction to swap, claim, or buy JUP.
