What is USDD?

A dollar token on TRON. The 2022 design and the 2025 design are different machines. Neither one is USDT.

First published 9 May 2022, the week USDD entered circulation. Expanded in October 2026 because the token people trade under that ticker is no longer the machine described in the launch letter. USDD is a token that tries to stay near one US dollar, associated with TRON. TRX is the chain’s coin. USDD is not TRX, and it is not Tether. What is TRON (TRX)? is the ledger. What is Tether (USDT)? is the large company dollar that also moves on that ledger. Stablecoins: useful, not magic is the category.

The April 2022 letter called USDD a decentralised algorithmic stablecoin. Circulation on TRON was scheduled for 5 May 2022. The mechanism it described was a mint and a burn against TRX: a dollar of TRX in for one USDD, or one USDD back for a dollar of TRX, with arbitrage supposed to hold the price. The same letter said a reserve, the TRON DAO Reserve, would hold liquid assets and named a very high interest rate as policy. A rate in a launch letter is a promise. It is not a property of the token, and it is not the number to expect now.

The month it launched

Terra’s collapse is what an algorithmic peg looks like when the bid dies. That break was the same month. USDD’s pitch rhymed with the design that had just failed: a sister token, a mint and burn, and a rate meant to attract deposits. Rhyme is not identity. This page will not narrate USDD as if it were UST. It will say the lesson of that month still applies to any peg that depends on people wanting the other token. DeFi is software with rules you cannot call support about.

Two tokens, one ticker in the marketing

The issuer’s own documents now split the story. The earlier token, which those documents call USDDOLD, is the one issued through the TRON DAO Reserve. The later system, which went live in January 2025 and is described as USDD 2.0, lets users mint the dollar token against collateral they lock, in the shape of a collateralised-debt position. If the collateral falls through the ratio, it can be liquidated. That is a different machine from a letter that said the protocol would swap USDD and TRX at a dollar. What is Dai (DAI)? is the older collateral dollar this later design is openly built beside. USDD is not DAI.

A peg module that swaps the token with other dollar tokens, such as USDT, is another piece of software. It works while the module has inventory and while those other tokens work. It is not a promise that a wallet balance is a bank deposit.

USDD on TRON uses a TRON address, the kind that starts with T. A token with the same ticker on Ethereum or elsewhere is a different entry. The wrong network is still the wrong city. A site that says “upgrade your USDD” and asks for a recovery phrase is not the issuer’s converter. Nothing here is an instruction to mint, swap, or hold USDD.
