Private key

The secret that proves you may spend. Whoever has it can move the coins.

A private key is the mathematical secret that matches an address. Wallets usually hide it behind a seed phrase. If someone else has the key or the phrase, they do not need your password, your email, or your permission.

There is no helpdesk reset on a public ledger. Share the key and the coins are theirs in practice. Lose it without a backup and they are nobody’s in practice.
